How Confirmation of Payee works
Confirmation of Payee (CoP) enables payers to verify that a payee's account details are correct before making a payment. As a technical service provider we securely route CoP requests between participants and responding institutions, returning the verification result within seconds to support faster, safer payment decisions.
Request
The Payer requests to add a new payee and provides the account name, sort code and beneficiary name
Route
The details are securely transmitted to the Responding bank, who will verify the payee against their own records.
Verify
The responding bank will check the account name for a match, close match, no match or if the check could not be completed
Respond
The CoP response is generated and sent back to the originating party within 1.5 seconds.
